Comparative Visual Search : A Di erence that Makes a Di erence

چکیده
In this article we present a new experimental paradigm: comparative visual search. Each half of a display contains simple geometrical objects of three di erent colors and forms. The two display-halves are identical except for one object mismatched in either color or form. The subject's task is to nd this mismatch. We illustrate the potential of this paradigm for investigating the underlying complex processes of perception and cognition by means of an eye-tracking study. Three possible search strategies are outlined, discussed, and reexamined on the basis of experimental results. Each strategy is characterized by the way it partitions the eld of objects into \chunks." These strategies are: (i) Stimulus-wise scanning with minimization of total scan path length (a \traveling salesman" strategy), (ii) scanning of the objects in xed-size areas (a \searchlight" strategy), and (iii) scanning of object sets based on variably sized clusters de ned by object density and heterogeneity (a \clustering" strategy). To elucidate the processes underlying comparative visual search, we introduce besides object density a new entropy-based measure for object heterogeneity. The e ects of local density and entropy on several basic and derived eye-movement variables clearly rule out the traveling salesman strategy, but are most compatible with the clustering strategy.

Orr Sommerfeld Solver Using Mapped Finite Di?erence Scheme for Plane Wake Flow
Linear stability analysis of the three dimensional plane wake flow is performed using a mapped finite di?erence scheme in a domain which is doubly infinite in the cross–stream direction of wake flow. The physical domain in cross–stream direction is mapped to the computational domain using a cotangent mapping of the form y = ?cot(??). The Squire transformation [2], proposed by Squire, is also us...
متن کاملKnowledge Di erence and its In uence on a Search Agent
This paper studies the in uence of knowledge difference on the performance of a search agent | { a controllable camera that can pan, tilt and zoom. The task of the agent is to search for a 3D target within a 3D environment. The goal is to maximize the probability of detecting the target within a given period of time. The search agent does this by autonomously controlling its state parameters to...
متن کاملThe Di erence All - Di erence Makes
We perform a comprehensive theoretical and experimental analysis of the use of all-diierent constraints. We prove that generalized arc-consistency on such constraints lies between neighborhood inverse consistency and, under a simple restriction, path inverse consistency on the binary representation of the problem. By generalizing the arguments of Kondrak and van Beek, we prove that a search alg...
متن کاملMeasuring dialect di erences ∗
We measure varietal di erences in general, and di erences with respect to standard languages in particular ( dialectality , in Herrgen/Schmidt's sense) in order to systematize observations about dialect di erences, to make sense of exceptions, and to enable measurements based on randomly selected material, thus obviating issues of potential bias. Finally, measurements allow the characterization...
متن کاملVoronoi cell nite di erence method for the di usion operator on arbitrary unstructured grids
Voronoi cells and the notion of natural neighbours are used to develop a nite di erence method for the di usion operator on arbitrary unstructured grids. Natural neighbours are based on the Voronoi diagram, which partitions space into closest-point regions. The Sibson and the Laplace (non-Sibsonian) interpolants which are based on natural neighbours have shown promise within a Galerkin framewor...
